The straw that healed the camel's back. [19 Dec 2009|12:02am]

It's funny how the smallest thing can completely destroy or remake you. Obviously I wouldn't be saying something like that if it hadn't happened, and my title likely already tipped you off on which way it went. Note to self: work on foreshadowing skills.

I'd pretty much resigned myself to being miserable this Christmas. I'd not be seeing my family (except for two people, one of whom may or may not be passing through and another whose might not happen because of the snow) and was pretty much planning on how to pass out for the entirety of the holiday. Sure, it's likely overly dramatic, but that's how I roll. Blah blah, creativity, blah blah, writer. You've read it all before.

Feel free to move along. Nothing new here. )

I don't know how long this'll last, so I'm running with it. I'm sure no one's too surprised by this, since I seem to constantly do this. It's sort of like being a bipolar person being shot at by Max Payne. Yeah, slow motion. That's right, a bullet time joke. Fuck you.

PS: American Dad just had Stan get a "new Glock" for Christmas. That thing was not a Glock. Looked more like a Beretta. Fuck you, American Dad.

Yet another burst of Steam. [17 Dec 2009|04:14am]

So I noticed today that The Last Remnant is available on Steam for 10 bucks until the 17th (so I'm not actually sure if it's still going, to be honest). This one flew a bit under my radar, if for no other reason than the reports of all the problems the 360 version apparently had. Well, apparently the PC version cleans up most of it, so I figured what the hell, it's 10 bucks. I swear Steam's gotten me more times this month than it ever has, but I'm coming out of it with a metric assload of games.

So I'm a few hours into the game and had to force myself to stop for the night. It's damned good so far, so barring any sort of shark jumping, it should have me enraptured at least as much as Infinite Undiscovery managed to do. The plot so far seems to have a good bit of life to it, mostly revolving around ultra awesome mega magic plot items, aka "remnants," that remind me almost too much of True Runes from Suikoden (or the Chronicles if you only played Tierkreis like someone around here). I can't comment too much on the plot since I've not gotten that far into it yet, but it seems promising enough.

Where'd the last five hours go? )

Either way, this game is seriously going to have to fuck up hardcore to make me dislike it. So far so great.

Two blacks, a redneck, and a guy in a leisure suit walk into a bar... [11 Dec 2009|07:37am]

Well, I've played through most of L4D2 now. For most games that'd be awful, but for this it's fine. It's meant to be played repeatedly, after all. It's sort of grown on me since the initial play, but there are still valid complaints to be made of the game. But it also does a lot right and isn't quite as much of a clone as all the reviews tried to make it out to be.

Break out the banjos. We're goin' South. )

So the verdict so far is that 2 is indeed a different game from 1. Yes, I know it's popular to whine that a game barely innovated and is just milking its success by releasing a sequel one year later. However, what little they changed is tangible to the point that you prefer one game over the other. If you want to just jump on for a half hour and shoot things, play the first. If you want to settle in for a slog through a picked-over Southern version of hell, play the second.
